| 5. | Indigo bush, Himalayan indigo, Indigofera Description:A member of the legume or pea family, this elegant Himalayan shrub varies in size according to its position from 90cm in an open exposed position, to more than 1.8m when trained against a warm wall. This charming plant does particularly well against a wall in a hot, dry site in full sun. Throughout the growing season it continuously produces small but plentiful purple-rose, pea-shaped flowers in columnar clusters. The flowers grow on the current year's wood, hence its resilience to bad weather. Its long, fine, elegant gray-green pinnate leaves give a lovely light and frothy effect and are usually held forward, almost horizontally. Although most of the Indigo bush topgrowth may be killed by frost in severe winters, it generally grows back again with multiple shoots. It resumes its growth very late in the season so do not assume it to be dead in late spring. It is normally one of the last shrubs to produce its foliage. It requires full sun and partialy dry soil. In full sun and well-drained soil the Indigo bush is reliably cold hardy up to the temperature zone 6 (-23.3 °C). Cannot tolerate water-logged soils. The ultimate height is 2m and it spreads to 3.50m wide. |

It ripens in September and contains up to 5 times the vitamin C content of blackcurrants. The fruit is seedless when it is not pollinated.
