1. Anthony Waterer Japanese Spirea, Japanese Meadowsweet, Maybush
Description:
The summer flowering spireas have help to provide beauty for the early summer display. They are small of stature and fit nicely in the smaller landscapes we use today. The Spirea Anthony Waterer is a very attractive deciduous dwarf shrub with flat-topped heads of rosy-pink flowers that cover the its top, backed by bright green foliage. It blooms on new growth each summer. Attractive new growth is reddish purple. The willow-like leaves are a wine-red to maroon and them in the fall maturing into a dark green. Grows to about 75cm tall and wide. Spireas, such as Anthony Waterer make excellent plants for adding to the front of mixed shrub borders that have a lot of evergreen plants. The twiggy deciduous form of the plant softens the stark green leaves of the evergreens in winter. In the summer the pink flowers add an interesting foil to the landscape. Spireas are best suited to full sun conditions. They are not particular about soil type but, like most shrubs, grow faster and bloom more profusely in richer soil. Once established they show excellent drought tolerance. If pruning is needed, cut them back hard just before new growth begins in the spring.

16. Apple Blossom Escallonia
Description:
This glossy-leaved evergreen compact shrub produces masses of pretty, apple blossom pink blooms flowering freely from June to September. With its dark green finely toothed waxy leaves makes a good hedge or border shrub. The flowers are usually borne singly, open up to 2.5cm across and are chalice-shaped, since the petals open outwards at their ends and then curve round the open mouth of the flower. Like most escallonias, it makes a good hedging plant. Its growth rate is average. It should be close clipped to maintain a dense habit of growth. This compact, bushy, evergreen shrub is ideal for a sunny, shrub border or for growing as a flowering hedge. It reaches height 2m spread 2m and will grow in full sun or medium shade in any fertile soil that is well drained. Escallonia is a sun loving draught tolerant plant suitable for problem areas. Ideal for fast growing screening but best grown away from cold drying winds since it is susceptible to wind chills. After pruning apply a generous 5-7 cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Hardy to temperature zone 7. In Slovakia, it needs winter protection in southernmost areas and has to be brought indoors in remaining ones.

26. Alpine fir, Silver fir, Subalpine fir
Description:
This is a handsome, broad-based, conical fir with attractive foliage. The exact colour varies, some needles are blue-green, some bluish silver, packed onto short horizontal branches creating a strongly textured effect. It is not too large for a big rock garden, or it could be planted, perhaps planted to the rear of other ornamental shrubs. After twenty years or so, the branches are more spread out so the colour effect is less intense: but a strong shape and shiny foliage really make their contribution. The fir has a height 2.40m and spreads 1.5 m. It requires sunny position and is fully frosthardy.

38. Autumn Bugbane
Description:
A tall, elegant perennial with upright spires of white flowers from September to October or even into November providing late season colour and interest in the border. It is unforgettable for its arching, candle-like pure white bottlebrush spikes of densely-packed tiny flowers that appear just when it seems the garden is exhausted. The flowers are scented and also splendid for cutting. The dark green flowering wands stretch quite a distance above the mass of fine foliage, making this is a see-through perennial whose height does not block the view beyond. Easy to grow and durable, this is a low maintainance plant growing at its best both in partial and total shade. As long as the soil is reasonably moisture retentive, organically-enriched, and shaded from hottest sun it can be either acid, alkaline or neutral. Its greatest enemy is dryness so it should be positioned well within reach of a sprinkler or soaker. Bugbane is a zone 4-9 plant, therefore can be successfully grown anywhere in Middle Europe. Also performs well in tubs or mixed containers. Plants take about three years to develop into a mature sized clump. After that however they provide interesting architectural form and lot of Autumn and Winter interest. They grow up to a height of 90-120cm and width of 60-75cm.
