Description:
This Rose of Sharon is an old-time favorite low maintenance shrub found in informal borders and hedges. If left unpruned its crown can reach 3m in diameter. It is loved primarily for its funnel-shaped long-lasting blooms that resemble those of the tropical hibiscus, yet not as flashy. They are 10cm wide, fuschia-pink coloured with deeper pink to carmine interiors and appear from late summer until mid-fall. Leaves are diamond-shaped, dark green, slightly palmate and toothed. The miniature tree itself is very tolerant to drought, heat, humidity, pollution and even to rabbits and deer. Its soil should be well-drained with some sand or clay and neutral to slightly alkaline (pH Range: 7 to 7.5 ). Sun should be full, though partial shade is tolerated. It is cold hardy in zones 5 to 9. A hard pruning in late winter will result in fewer but larger flowers, and a moderate pruning results in larger number of smaller flowers. No pruning can result in less flowers as it exclusively flowers on new wood. Therefore approx. one-third of the previous year's growth should be trimmed out each Spring before the new growth begins.
