Baldcypress is the only conifer able to grow in water for significant periods of time and of all trees, it has perhaps the greatest known tolerance for flooding. Trees planted at Blue River reservoir in Oregon are submerged for several months each year, including about half of the growing season. Baldcypress is a large deciduous coniferous tree to 30m tall and 3m in diameter. It has brown bark brown, with long fibrous ridges peeling in strips. Twigs are very thin, flat, green, deciduous. Leaves are needlelike, crowded on thin twigs and giving a featherlike appearance. They are only 1-2 cm long, dull pale green, remaining attached to the twig which drops off in the late Autumn. At that time the leaves change their colour to beautiful orange before they fall. A valuable timber tree, its wood is extremely resistant to decay and is widely used in structures that are exposed to wet conditions. Oldest specimens in Black River Swamp in southeast North Carolina are up to 130 cm in diameter and over 1600 years old. Its roots form "knees" that extend above the water. Baldcypress is the state tree of Louisiana (Watson 1993). Baldcypress grows well in cities and is used as a landscape ornamental tree. Wet areas that are slow to drain. Does very well in peat soils.
