Description:
Sweetly scented, large, soft pink flowers with golden-yellow centres in May and June and purple-flushed, mid green divided leaves. This fast-growing clematis is excellent for training over a pergola or covering an unsightly wall or fence in a north-facing site as it tolerates shade well. Plant near an entrance or path where the delicate almond fragrance can be appreciated. It flowers on last year's wood. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the climber needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring. Position: full sun or partial shade. In cold locations its stems can be damaged by frost therefore we plant it on a place well sheltered from cold winter winds. Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil. This is a vigorous grower quickly covering large fences and walls and after two years reaching height of 10 metres (32 ft). Rubens is the hardiest cultivar of the species.
